January is National Mentoring Month; You are encouraged to volunteer
Every day, mentors in communities across the nation are providing crucial support and
guidance to young people. Whether a day is spent helping with homework, playing
catch or just listening, these moments have an enormous, lasting effect on a child's life.
In light of their contributions, January has been declared National Mentoring Month to
recognize those who give generously of themselves by mentoring young Americans.
This year, 2011, marks the 10th anniversary of National Mentoring Month, which was
created by the Harvard School of Public Health and The National Mentoring Partnership (MENTOR)
in order to focus national attention on the need for mentors. The goal of establishing
National Mentoring Month is threefold:
1) Raise awareness of mentoring in its various forms;
2) Recruit individuals to mentor, especially in programs that have waiting lists of young
people; and
3) Promote the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations to engage their
constituents in mentoring.
